House Majority Leader Steve Scalise leads GOP in governing with a slim majority

HRepublicans must prove that they are ouse can govern Now that the chamber is under their control, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Republican-LA says.

Scalise is now second behind Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R–CA) in the House Republican leadership. believes Republicans have an advantage of 222-213 over Democrats in that they can handle large sections of their agenda, even though it is difficult to hold a majority.

He is an affable Louisianan with a strong track record of success in House Republican leadership. For 4 1/2 years, Scalise was majority whip under GOP Speakers John Boehner & Paul Ryan. Scalise served as the minority whip in the House Democrats’ majority between 2019-2023.

Following being injured while training for the annual Congressional Baseball Game (June 14, 2017), he survived, and subsequently recovered. This experience has reinforced his conviction that there is no substitute for a good coach. “make every day count.”

“God gave me a second chance on life,” Scalise said. “It easily could have gone a different way that day, and I know how close I was to not making it out.”

Scalise was among three people who were injured by James Hodgkinson on that hot spring day at 7:09 am. James Hodgkinson has a track record of domestic violence and left-wing extremist. Hodgkinson fired a gun at Scalise during the congressional Republican Baseball practice in Alexandria (Virginia).

Scalise was finally discharged from the hospital on July 26, following a string of procedures and several trips to an ICU in a Washington, D.C., medical facility. Scalise then underwent inpatient rehabilitation.

“I saw real miracles that day and not just for me, but for other people that made it through that day as well,” Scalise said. “I was in a hospital for 3 1/2 months and, once I got beyond wondering if I was going to make it through the next day, and then I had to plan on learning how to walk again. When I can actually start thinking about what I wanted to do when I got out of the hospital, there was never a doubt I want to go back to work.”

Scalise has been appointed majority leader and is responsible for scheduling the items that will be considered by the floor. Scalise hopes recent House and conference rule changes will allow for more floor consideration and further amplification of the debate on bills.
