Entertainment

Publisher Pan Macmillan has added a trigger warning to “Gone With The Wind,” alerting readers to its “racist” content.

The latest edition of Margaret Mitchell’s classic 1936 novel, “Gone With The Wind,” contains a trigger warning from Pan Macmillan. The warning advises that the book includes depictions and content deemed “racist” and “hurtful” by some readers.

“Gone With The Wind” Trigger Warning

Fox News reports that Pan Macmillan has added a detailed warning to the book:

“‘Gone with the Wind’ is a novel which includes problematic elements including the romanticization of a shocking era in our history and the horrors of slavery,… representation of unacceptable practices, racist and stereotypical depictions and troubling themes, characterization, language and imagery.”

The warning goes on to explain that the language and terminology used in the book reflect the historical context in which it was written, and therefore may be hurtful or harmful to some readers.

Publisher Adds New Forward

Pan Macmillan has also hired Philippa Gregory, a historical fiction writer, to write a new forward for “Gone With The Wind” that addresses the book’s “white supremacist” elements, according to The New York Post.

In the forward, Gregory states that the novel unequivocally indicates that “African people are not of the same species as white people. This is the lie that spoils the novel.”

Gone With The Wind Movie Also Targeted

The novel was adapted into an Oscar-winning 1939 film starring Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable. The movie has also been criticized for its depiction of slavery in recent years.

In 2020, after George Floyd’s death, HBO Max removed “Gone With The Wind” from its streaming platform. WarnerMedia CEO Bob Greenblatt stated that the film would return only after a Disclaimer had been added to it. A spokesperson for HBO Max added that the movie “depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible.”
