GLAAD CEO claims Twitter is now a threat to LGBTQ+ community.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation CEO Blames Elon Musk for Increase in Anti-LGBT Rhetoric on Twitter

The CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), Sarah Kate Ellis, has pointed fingers at Elon Musk for what she claims is a rise in anti-LGBT rhetoric on Twitter. In a recent appearance on MSNBC, Ellis clarified her previous statement that the social media platform is “the most dangerous platform for LGBTQ people.” This comes after GLAAD gave Twitter a Social Media Safety Index (SMSI) score of 33% in 2023, citing an “alarming and steadily growing epidemic of anti-LGBTQ hate and disinformation” on the platform.

While other social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube also fell short, with none of them reaching a score higher than 65%, Twitter was the only platform that saw a decrease in its score compared to the previous year. GLAAD has been publishing SMSI scores for three years now.

“What is really sad here is that Twitter actually used to be the leader,” Ellis expressed. “We sat on their trust and safety council. But Elon Musk has turned Twitter into a weapon against the LGBTQ community. He leads the charge, literally leads the charge tweeting out anti-trans rhetoric and misinformation about the trans community and the LGBTQ community.”

Ellis highlighted that the decline in score was primarily due to Twitter’s refusal to take action against users who misgender others on the platform.

“I absolutely support trans,” Musk clarified in a tweet before acquiring the platform, “but all these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare.”

Musk will continue to serve as the CEO of Twitter until Linda Yaccarino takes over later this month, but he will still be responsible for software development and core principles.
