Feinstein doesn’t remember missing Senate, but was away for 10 weeks.

Senator Feinstein Scolds Reporter Over Recent Absence

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) recently scolded a reporter who mentioned her lengthy absence from Washington, D.C. during an interview. The 89-year-old senator was absent from the Senate for nearly three months while recovering from the shingles virus. Since her return, she has been using a wheelchair and has kept a more limited schedule than before.

Retiring Senator Denies Absence

Feinstein had just voted against a measure that would have nullified some D.C. criminal justice reforms when the reporter approached her. The retiring senator mentioned a problem with one of her legs but said that she had been feeling better. However, when the reporter asked about her recent return to the Senate and whether her colleagues had offered well-wishes, the interview took a turn.

Feinstein denied being absent and insisted that she had been working and voting. The reporter assumed that the senator meant she had been working from home, but Feinstein insisted that she had not been gone at all. The interview ended abruptly.

Concerns Over Fitness to Serve

Feinstein is the oldest member of the Senate, and concerns had been raised about her fitness to continue serving even before her recent battle with shingles. Since her diagnosis, those calls have grown louder, especially amid concerns that the Senate Judiciary Committee could have trouble advancing President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees while missing a tie-breaking vote.
