Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was among the dozens of people who were arrested during an anti-Israel protest at the St. Louis campus of Washington University on Saturday evening.

Local NBC affiliate KSDK reported that Stein, the far-Left Jewish political figure who has supported the BDS movement targeting Israel, spent six hours in police custody and was released at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Video shared in a post from Stein’s account on X appeared to show the moment the candidate was detained. The post said Stein’s campaign manager, Jason Call, and deputy campaign manager, Kelly Merrill-Cayer, were also arrested.

Protesters at Washington University have been calling for an end to Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip and demanding that the private college cut ties with Boeing over the aerospace company’s relationship with Israel.

Similar demonstrations have popped up at universities around the country, resulting in scenes of chaos and arrests by law enforcement. There has also been a wave of condemnation from political leaders over displays of anti-Semitism witnessed during the demonstrations.

In a statement on Saturday, Washington University said a “large group of individuals” that included students, employees, and people not affiliated with the school entered the campus “with the intention of causing a significant disruption.”

“It quickly became clear through the words and actions of this group that they did not have good intentions on our campus and that this demonstration had the potential to get out of control and become dangerous,” Washington University said.

“When the group began to set up a camp in violation of university policy, we made the decision to tell everyone present that they needed to leave,” Washington University added. “We arrested more than 80 individuals who refused to leave after being asked multiple times. All will face charges of trespassing and some may also be charged with resisting arrest and assault, including for injuries to police officers.”

Washington University concluded, “We are firmly committed to free expression and allow ample opportunity for voices to be heard on our campus. However, we expect everyone to respect our policies and we will take swift action to enforce them to their fullest extent.”
