Former teammate of Lia Thomas speaks out against UPenn.

An Ex-Teammate Speaks Out Against University of Pennsylvania’s Handling of Transgender Swimmer

An ex-teammate of controversial transgender swimmer Lia Thomas called out the University of Pennsylvania on Monday, alleging the school silenced her and her teammates regarding concerns over Thomas’s presence on the team.

“Our university, actually, just didn’t really have any conversations with us, at all, about our concerns with the situation happening,” former UPenn swimmer Paula Scanlan told Fox Business on Varney & Co.

“Then, once it was already a media storm and Thomas was already breaking all these records, that’s when they came in and told us, ‘Please don’t talk to the media. This is a nonnegotiable,'” she added.

Counseling and Support

Counseling was also provided for any biologically female athlete who was not comfortable with the situation or objected, according to Scanlan.

“They brought in a whole panel of individuals,” she said. “Someone from the LGBT center, someone from the psychological services, and a bunch of people from the athletic department.”

“This was already halfway through the season,” she continued, “was the first time we had a formal meeting about it, and, so, yeah, Lia continued to swim on the team, and there were no changes that were made to the entire season. … It just continued as if everything was normal.”
