EU Passes Groundbreaking A.I. Act

The European Union’s legislative branch passed a draft law that would implement the first major regulations on the growing industry of artificial intelligence.

The A.I. Act, passed by the European Parliament on Wednesday, is a significant step towards regulating the use of artificial intelligence. The bill aims to limit the use of certain A.I. software, including facial recognition in public spaces and predictive police software. Additionally, the act would introduce new transparency measures for chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

What’s Next?

While the legislation has been passed, the details of the A.I. Act will still need to be agreed upon by representatives from the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission.

U.S. Follows Suit

The United States is also taking steps to regulate artificial intelligence. On Tuesday, Congress attended the first of three briefings organized by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). During the briefing, an MIT professor provided a simple explanation of how A.I. operates.
