Swalwell Suspends Campaign Amid Sexual Assault Accusations
A provocative op-ed-style piece from The Federalist centers on Eric Swalwell’s sexual misconduct allegations and the rapid unraveling of his gubernatorial campaign. It portrays a cascade of accusations reported by the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN, including claims from former staffers about unwanted sexual conduct and other alleged misconduct. Swalwell suspends his campaign, apologizes for “mistakes in judgment” without detailing them, and vows to contest the allegations, while his campaign and allies face mounting pressure and a wave of staff departures and revoked endorsements.
The article frames the fallout as a collapse of Swalwell’s political credibility and campaign infrastructure, with democrats such as House leaders urging him to quit and several prominent endorcements withdrawn. It uses headings like “Betrays the Trust” and “Jaws of Defeat” to underscore the perceived betrayal and the looming defeat, and it weaves in broader liberal infighting, including connections to past Russia-related controversies and alleged ties to a Chinese asset, to argue that Swalwell has long been a target of political enemies.
The piece also explores the dynamics within the California governor’s race, highlighting figures like Katie Porter and Cheyenne Hunt, and suggests Democrats should coalesce around Porter amid the turmoil. It paints Swalwell’s supporters as dwindling and implies that his accusers are gaining traction, even noting a Manhattan District Attorney examination into the matter and the prospect of talking to Swalwell’s accusers.
Throughout, the author uses sharp, hyperbolic rhetoric and satirical comparisons (including a chimpanzee civil war analogy) to critique political hypocrisy and the idea of “liberals eating their own.” The piece closes with a byline naming Matt Kittle as the author and identifies the outlet as The Federalist.
It’s rough these days in Uganda’s Kibale National Park, the battleground of a chimpanzee feud that scientists liken to a human civil war.
The mob violence, anthropologist say, is shocking. In some cases, several aggressors will corner an enemy male chimp, hold him down, beat him, bite him, drag him, then “rip off his testicles.”
All things considered, the castrated ape still had a better weekend than Eric Swalwell.
Mr. Russia collusion hoaxer has met his political match: his moral turpitude.
On Sunday evening, the far-left California congressman announced he was suspending his campaign for governor following explosive accusations of sexual misconduct from former staffers.
Swalwell apologized to his family, staff, friends, and supporters, but remained defiant.
“I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” he wrote in a statement, not detailing what those “mistakes” might be. He promised that he will continue to fight the “serious, false allegations that have been made.”
I am suspending my campaign for Governor.
To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past.
I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.

‘Betrays the Trust’
Swalwell’s house of cards crumbled quickly after the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday dropped the bombshell report in which a former staffer accused the congressman of sexual assault. CNN followed with more details and more women stepping forward. Swalwell is accused of sending some women “unsolicited explicit messages or nude photos,” Anthony Weiner style.
By Sunday, Swalwell didn’t seem to have much of a campaign infrastructure left. Key advisers and staffers had bolted, and dozens more demanded he leave the campaign and his House seat.
“The behavior detailed in these reports is abhorrent, beneath the dignity of those serving in public office and betrays the trust of all Californians,” asserts a joint statement from the campaign’s senior staffers.

In a statement Friday, Swalwell insisted, “For nearly 20 years, I have served the public — as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women.”
You know who doesn’t believe that? The women who accuse him of unwanted sexual contact. And lots of Democrats who quickly scurried off the Swalwell ship like a pack of bubonic plague-infested rats.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were among the House Dems who urged Swalwell to leave the race. Swalwell’s Russia collusion hoaxer buddy, California junior Sen. Adam Schiff, among other Dems, dropped his endorsement.
‘Jaws of Defeat’
The allegations are awful. You could see them coming like a slow train in recent days.
As The Federalist reported last week, the long-circulating rumors about the Democrat’s sexual proclivities percolated for some time. Cheyenne Hunt, a Democrat who in 2024 ran unsuccessfully for California’s 45th Congressional District seat, posted on her social media sites that she has been “working with a number of women who are in the process of coming forward and sharing their stories of sexual harassment and even alleged abuse at the hands of Eric Swalwell.”
Hunt, who serves as executive director of the liberal organization Gen-Z for Change, claimed a “major news outlet” is preparing to publish a story on the allegations. She was right.
Hunt just happens to have “academic and political connections” to Democrat Katie Porter, a former congresswoman and candidate for governor and arguably one of the worst human beings in California. Her campaign denied any relationship between the two, according to CBS News.
Swalwell’s campaign, what’s left of it anyway, earlier had told Politico the “false, outrageous rumor” was being spread less than a month before California’s primary election voting window begins. The campaign blames “flailing opponents who have sadly teamed up with MAGA conspiracy theorists because they know Eric Swalwell is the frontrunner in this race.”
Maybe. Porter is about as nasty as they come. Clearly there’s no love lost between her and Swalwell, or liberal billionaire tech baron Tom Steyer. The three Democrats and two Republicans are the top contenders in an extremely crowded open primary field in the June 2 election.
Ever the opportunist, the scheming Porter (apparently with straight face) on Sunday urged California Democrats to do what Chronicle political columnist Joe Garofoli suggests: back Katie Porter.
“Democrats can pull victory from the jaws of defeat by coalescing around Porter,” Porter’s X post echoes.
Liberals Eating Their Own
But Swalwell over the years has proven to be about as trustworthy as Iranian peace negotiators. The congressman who had a cozy relationship with a Chinese spy while serving on the House Intelligence committee stood on the front lines of the Democrats’ and the deep state’s Russia collusion lie that claimed President Donald Trump and his campaign were working with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election.
Wait is this the Fang Fang guy? The guy who attacked me from the clouds like 2 months ago? @RepSwalwell Well that was a quick demise 😭 I didn’t even have time to put his name on a champagne bottle before his life fell apart. At best he is a serial drunk scumbag cheater who… https://t.co/PErvXzYyCG

The #MeToo hypocrite served as one of the left’s ravenous attack dogs in the political psy-op against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. As Fox News recalled, Swalwell demanded that women who without proof accused the Trump nominee of sexual assault be “heard.” Interestingly, the congressman’s attorney fired out cease and desist letters to Swalwell’s accusers on the eve of the story breaking.
Oh, how I remember this hypocritical predator peddling these utterly bullshit allegations against Kavanaugh. https://t.co/x45hbFg7Ez

Things could get a whole lot worse for the Democrat. CBS News reports that Manhattan prosecutors are investigating Swalwell’s alleged misconduct. They want to talk to his accusers.
“Our specially trained prosecutors, investigators, and counselors are well-equipped to help [them] in a trauma-informed, survivor-centered manner,” a spokesperson said in a statement to CBS.
The same office that was weaponized against Trump is now training its fire on a fellow Democrat. The same people who have long applauded Eric Swalwell for being a good progressive a defender of women are now eating their words.
It seems these days the hypocrite congressman would be safer in the middle of a chimpanzee civil war.
