Dodgers introduce Christian family night following Catholic backlash over gay ‘nuns’ recognition.

Los Angeles Dodgers to Host “Christian Faith and Family Day” Following Controversy

The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced that they will be hosting a “Christian Faith and Family Day” on July 30th, just days after re-inviting a group of self-described “queer and trans nuns” to their annual Pride Night. Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who has been vocal about his Christian faith, announced the event on Twitter, promising that it will be “bigger and better than it was before COVID.”

“Excited to announce the relaunch of Christian Faith and Family Day at Dodger Stadium on July 30th. More details to come— but we are grateful for the opportunity to talk about Jesus and determined to make it bigger and better than it was before COVID. Hope to see you on July 30th!”

The Dodgers have faced criticism for their decision to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a gay performance group, at their annual Pride Night. The group’s invitation was initially rescinded after concerns were raised about their use of anti-Catholic imagery, but the Dodgers later re-invited them to the event.

Controversy Continues

The decision to re-invite the group has prompted calls for a boycott of the team from prominent Catholics and Christians. The announcement of the “Christian Faith and Family Day” has also been met with skepticism from some, who say it is not enough to make up for the team’s decision to honor an anti-Christian group.

“Not enough, Dodgers. If you really want to reach out to Christians, don’t celebrate anti-Christian hate groups,” tweeted Bishop Robert Barron of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota.

CatholicVote, a political advocacy organization, has launched a $1 million ad campaign urging people to boycott the Dodgers. Brian Burch, the organization’s president, has called on the team to apologize and stop honoring “hateful anti-Catholic organizations.”

“Creating a ‘faith and family’ event does not balance the decision to honor a perverted, fake ‘nun’ group that exists to mock the Catholic religion. In many ways, it emphasizes the contrast and makes our case even stronger,” Burch said.

The controversy surrounding the Dodgers’ decision to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence shows no signs of abating, and it remains to be seen whether the team’s “Christian Faith and Family Day” will be enough to appease its critics.
