Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow dropped out of the Senate race weeks ahead of the Democratic primary, narrowing the field to just two major candidates.

McMorrow announced her exit in a post on social media on Sunday, thanking supporters and outlining her political journey, but not giving an explicit reason for her dropping out.

“So I want to be very clear about what this announcement is not. I may be suspending this campaign, but I am not leaving the fight,” she said, going on to say her journey began after the 2016 election, when she typed “How to run for office” into her search bar.

“Now, I haven’t been shy about calling for new leadership and a better Democratic Party. I mean it. The energy is there. People are crying out for change. And we owe it to them to listen,” McMorrow said. “Then we need to build it up, together, from the ground up.”

Rather than explicitly endorsing any of her opponents, the Michigan Democrat pledged her support to whichever Democrat won the primary.

“So here’s what we do next. Every day through November 3rd. We win this Senate seat and send Mike Rogers back to Florida for good. Whoever wins this primary on August 4th will have my full support,” she said.

Despite not endorsing anyone, her dropping out was widely viewed as a move to consolidate the Democratic vote behind Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) against Abdul el Sayed, who is running with the backing of the socialist wing of the party. Their statements widely reflected this view, with Stevens praising McMorrow and Sayed blaming outside influence for drowning her out.

“Anyone who raises their hand to serve the people of Michigan and puts forward thoughtful ideas for how they would lead earns my respect. Mallory McMorrow has been an important voice, both in this race and in the State Senate, for policies that benefit Michigan’s children and families, and I look forward to working with her in the future to build a stronger Michigan for everyone,” Stevens said.

“To Senator McMorrow, her family, her staff, and her supporters: thank you for the work you did for democracy,” Sayed said. “The same party insiders she had the courage to challenge have been bullying anyone who opposes their chosen candidate.”

He went on to point out the money spent against him and tried to draw in McMorrow’s supporters through anti-establishment arguments.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has backed Stevens, while Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have backed el Sayed.

McMorrow’s campaign experienced a major fall from grace, going from being tied in first in February to falling far behind el Sayed and Stevens in July. The latest polling has el Sayed in the lead by a significant amount, a lead establishment Democrats are hoping to eliminate by siphoning McMorrow’s support to Stevens.
