DC Officials Released Man Accused of Assaulting Dem Congresswoman Less Than Two Months Ago

According to court records, the man accused of beating up a Minnesota Democratic Congresswoman seems to have been in Washington, D.C., as recently as two-months ago. Washington Free Beacon.

The Metropolitan Police Department announced Friday the arrest of Kendrick Hamlin, AKA Hamlin Khalil Hamlin, for assaulting Rep. Angie Craig (D., Minn.) in her apartment building’s elevator. Craig “suffered bruising, but is otherwise physically okay,” A spokesman for the police said that they were responding to the attack.

Hamlin is no stranger to D.C.’s criminal justice system. According to records, a man with the same name was also arrested in September for two theft charges. He was accused of stealing goods from a Capitol Hill grocery store. This led to a three-month-long saga of imprisonment and court appearances. Court documents obtained by Free Beacon show that Kendrid H. Hamlin pleaded guilty in December to two counts of assaulting an officer.

Although there are minor variations in his name, records show that he was identified by a spokesperson for the D.C. Courts. Free Beacon Both arrests were made against the same person. In December, all charges against him were dropped in a plea agreement.

Craig is being attacked as Washington, D.C., overhauls its criminal code to give offenders more leniency in a variety of offenses, including gun-related felonies. D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser initially vetoed the bill to dramatically change the city’s penal code but was overridden by the city council. Craig voted along with Republicans to condemn D.C.’s attack just a day before the attack.

The D.C. police declined to confirm Hamlin’s criminal background and referred the Free Beacon to the D.C. Superior Court. The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not respond to a request for comment.

The mystery of how Hamlin was allowed onto the streets remains. He was charged with second-degree theft on September 21, 2022 and was released on bail.
