DC crime rates are surging with carjackings surpassing 900 in 2023
Washington, D.C. Faces Alarming Rise in Carjackings
Crime rates in Washington, D.C. continue to soar, with the most recent data revealing a shocking 900+ carjackings in the district this year. The numbers are staggering, and the situation is becoming increasingly concerning.
Disturbing Statistics
- As of Friday, there have been 911 carjacking offenses in 2023, with a staggering 77% involving firearms.
- Only 244 cases have been closed, and a mere 159 arrests have been made.
- Shockingly, 65% of the arrests involve juveniles.
- For comparison, the number of carjacking incidents reached 485 in 2022.
“The crime of ‘carjacking’ — which is stealing a car by force — captures headlines across the country,” the Metropolitan Police Department states on its website. ”Statistically speaking, however, your chances of being a victim of carjacking are very slim, and taking preventive measures can reduce that risk even more.”
Despite these reassurances, there have been several high-profile carjacking incidents in recent months, with a staggering 6,372 cars stolen this year alone.
Notable Incidents
In October, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) fell victim to a carjacking in Washington’s Navy Yard neighborhood. Fortunately, he escaped unharmed, and his vehicle was later recovered. The suspects were described as young men.
On November 13, Secret Service agents protecting President Joe Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi Biden, thwarted a carjacking attempt by opening fire on three suspects trying to break into their unmarked vehicle in Georgetown.
Another incident occurred on November 21, where four armed suspects stole a car and valuable jewelry. They intentionally collided their Lexus with a BMW, and when the victims pulled over, the suspects brandished handguns and ordered them out of the car. Among the stolen items were two rings worth $2,000 and $5,000.
Just eight days later, an FBI agent reported that armed suspects had stolen his vehicle. Fortunately, the car was recovered a short distance away.
Root Causes and Frustrations
The rise in juvenile criminals in Washington is exacerbated by a lack of strong policies to detain or prosecute them. Lindsey Appiah, deputy mayor for public safety, highlighted Washington Attorney General Brian Schwalb’s opposition to increased pretrial detentions for juvenile offenders during a public hearing in February. Schwalb has faced criticism for failing to prosecute repeat offenders, particularly juveniles.
Overall, crime in the district has surged by 27%, with violent crime increasing by 40% and property crime by 25%. Motor vehicle theft, in particular, has skyrocketed by a staggering 92%.
Lawmakers from across the nation have called on Washington leaders to take decisive action against this crime wave. Rep. Cuellar expressed his shock at the over 900 carjackings, emphasizing the need for resources, support for the police, and stricter laws to deter criminals.
Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) condemned Mayor Muriel Bowser and other Washington government leaders for their failure to address the crime epidemic plaguing the city.
Washington’s efforts to combat crime have faced numerous obstacles, with some lawmakers attributing the challenges to the district’s lack of statehood. In a controversial move, Congress overturned an overhaul of the criminal code, marking the first time in 30 years that a local law passed by the D.C. Council has been repealed.
Cracking Down on Carjacking
Starting on November 7, Washington police began distributing free AirTags to residents living in carjacking hotspots. This initiative, led by the Metropolitan Police Department and Mayor Bowser, aims to curb carjacking incidents. The tags are allocated to residents in specific Police Service Areas.
Acting Police Chief Pamela Smith emphasized the importance of these tracking devices in aiding officers and detectives in locating stolen vehicles, recovering property, and gathering crucial evidence for investigations.
Within just three weeks, the number of reported carjackings has risen from 840 to over 900, highlighting the urgency of addressing this alarming trend.

However, critics argue that these measures are not enough and that a comprehensive and coordinated effort is needed to combat the problem effectively. They call for a multi-pronged approach that includes strengthening law enforcement capabilities, increasing investment in community outreach and youth programs, and addressing underlying socio-economic factors that contribute to crime.
