Dave Chappelle slams San Francisco: ‘WTF happened here?’

Comedian Dave Chappelle Bluntly Criticizes San Francisco

During a recent show in San Francisco, comedian Dave Chappelle didn’t hold back his thoughts on the city’s current state. “What the f— happened to this place?” he asked the audience, adding, “Y’all … need a Batman!”

A City in Crisis

Chappelle’s comments reflect the city’s ongoing struggles with homelessness and crime. San Francisco has seen a 35% increase in homelessness since 2019, with an estimated 38,000 people living on the streets on any given night. The police department has also experienced a staffing shortage, with a 12% decrease in full-duty sworn officers from 2019 to 2022.

A Public Health Crisis

Chappelle’s experience at an Indian restaurant in the city, where he witnessed a homeless man defecating in front of the establishment, is unfortunately not uncommon. In fact, a newcomer to the city developed a free app called “the Snapcrap” app in 2018 to make it easier for people to report human feces and used needles on San Francisco’s streets.

A Lack of Safety

San Francisco’s safety concerns extend beyond public defecation and used needles. A recent poll found that 78% of residents would ride public transportation more frequently if it were cleaner and safer. Only 17% of those polled said they feel safe on public transit. Whole Foods and Nordstrom have also closed businesses in the city due to safety concerns.

Chappelle’s blunt words may have been shocking, but they reflect the reality of a city in crisis. San Francisco must address its homelessness and crime issues to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents and visitors.
