Swiss Cyclist Gino Mäder Dies After High-Speed Crash at Tour de Suisse

Tragedy struck the Tour de Suisse as Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder, 26, lost his life in a high-speed crash at Tour De Suisse.”>devastating high-speed crash during a steep descent. The incident occurred the day before his untimely death.

Mäder and American cyclist Magnus Sheffield were hurtling down the road at approximately 60 mph when the accident occurred, as reported by the New York Post. Medical staff at the scene performed CPR to resuscitate Mäder before he was airlifted to the hospital. Sadly, he passed away despite the efforts of the hospital staff.

The Bahrain Victorious team, to which Mäder belonged, expressed their devastation in a heartfelt statement, extending their thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones. They acknowledged the exceptional efforts of the hospital staff but ultimately had to bid farewell to one of their brightest stars.

The news of Mäder’s passing reached the cyclists just 30 minutes before the start of the sixth stage. In a touching tribute, the riders observed a moment of silence for their fallen comrade and completed Friday’s route together. The race will resume on Saturday.

World champion cyclist Remco Evenepoel expressed his devastation and offered his support to Mäder’s family, friends, and teammates. He also criticized the decision to have the riders finish the stage on the treacherous mountainous road where the accident occurred, emphasizing the need for considering the risks involved in such descents.

Magnus Sheffield, the other cyclist involved in the crash, suffered a concussion and bruising and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Mäder, a talented young cyclist, began his career as a track cyclist before transitioning to road cycling in 2019. In 2021, he achieved a stage victory at the Giro d’Italia and claimed the young rider classification at the Vuelta a España, a prestigious award in stage races.

His team expressed their admiration for Mäder’s extraordinary athleticism, determination, and passion for the sport, stating that he served as an inspiration to the entire cycling community.
