Christie dashes DeSantis’s Iowa hopes: ‘It’s me, Trump, and Nikki.
Chris Christie Predicts Ron DeSantis’ Campaign Will Falter After Iowa Caucuses
Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie has delivered a warning to his opponents as the new year begins, advising them to know when to quit. In an interview with the Messenger, Christie specifically targeted challenger Ron DeSantis, predicting that his campaign will start to decline after the Iowa caucuses next month. According to Christie, DeSantis won’t even be a top contender in the Iowa contest.
“He’s got to do really well in Iowa or it’s time to go back to Tallahassee,” Christie stated, referring to DeSantis. “We get here. It’ll be me, [Donald] Trump and Nikki [Haley]. We’ll see how it goes.”
The Iowa caucuses, which mark the beginning of the primary election season, are crucial in determining a candidate’s viability and strength. The winner of the Iowa caucuses often sets the tone for voters in other states, indicating which candidates are the strongest and whose campaigns are unlikely to succeed. If a candidate performs poorly in Iowa, it is common for them to withdraw from the race shortly after.
The Republican Iowa caucuses are scheduled for January 15, just over a month away. Current polls show Trump leading with an average of 45.9% support among Republican voters in Iowa. DeSantis trails far behind in second place with an average of 19.7% support, closely followed by Haley with 17.5%. Christie only has 3.9% support.
Despite his low polling numbers, Christie remains confident in his chances, both in Iowa and beyond. He emphasizes that he doesn’t rely on polls, as they can be misleading. Christie believes that voters are not easily swayed by numbers alone.
“I don’t look at the polling as being instructive at all, having gone through this in 2016,” Christie explained. “People just extrapolate these things from polls in a way that makes it too formulaic. Voters aren’t that way.”
However, Christie does have a voting threshold in mind for both the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries. If he fails to meet that threshold, he has stated that he will suspend his campaign. The exact number, though, remains undisclosed.
“That’s for me to know. And believe me, you’ll see me react to it. It’s not like you don’t know what I will do. In 2016, I didn’t get to the number I wanted to get to and I dropped out the next day,” Christie revealed. “But I don’t think that’s gonna happen. I feel it when I’m out there now interacting with voters.”
Only time will tell if Christie’s predictions hold true and if DeSantis can overcome the odds in the upcoming Iowa caucuses.

However, Christie’s prediction that DeSantis will falter after the Iowa caucuses raises questions about the Florida governor’s chances and the current state of the Republican race. DeSantis, who has been positioning himself as a strong conservative contender, will face significant pressure to perform well in Iowa to gain momentum and establish himself as a serious candidate.
Christie’s remarks also reflect the competitive nature of the Republican primaries, with candidates facing intense scrutiny and pressure to prove their viability. For DeSantis, a poor showing in Iowa could undermine his campaign and lead to a loss of support and financial backing.
It is worth noting that Christie himself is no stranger to the challenges of the Iowa caucuses. In the 2016 Republican primaries, Christie’s campaign struggled to gain traction and ended shortly after a disappointing performance in Iowa. His warning to DeSantis could be seen as a reflection of his own experiences and a cautionary tale to other candidates.
However, predictions in politics are inherently uncertain, and it is important to consider the numerous factors that can influence the outcome of an election. While Christie may believe that DeSantis’ campaign will decline after Iowa, it is ultimately up to the voters to decide. DeSantis still has time to prove himself and gain support before the caucuses, and the unpredictable nature of politics means that anything can happen.
As the Republican primaries heat up, all eyes will be on Iowa to see how candidates like DeSantis perform. The outcome of the caucuses will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of the race, but it is impossible to say for certain what will happen. Only time will tell if Christie’s prediction will come true or if DeSantis can defy expectations and secure a strong showing in Iowa.
