Bill De Blasio and his wife announce they’re seeing other people but continue living together.

Former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and Wife Announce Unconventional Relationship

Bill de Blasio, the former mayor of New York City, has made a surprising announcement about his marriage. He and his wife, Chirlane McCray, have decided to stay together but explore relationships with other people.

De Blasio and McCray recently participated in a photoshoot with the New York Times to discuss their relationship and reveal their separation. The couple’s journey took a turn when de Blasio sought therapy during the COVID-19 pandemic, which made him emotionally vulnerable.

McCray also pointed to de Blasio’s failed presidential campaign as a breaking point in their marriage. She referred to it as a “distraction,” and de Blasio admitted his ambitions took a toll on their relationship. After dropping out of the race due to low polling, de Blasio attempted to run for a congressional seat but faced similar challenges.

Throughout his political career, de Blasio has faced criticism for his support of his wife’s mental health initiative, which received significant funding. The program’s lack of tangible results and the amount of money spent drew scrutiny. The New York Times even referred to the couple as “the most significant and dissected biracial couple in American politics.”

Prior to their marriage, McCray openly discussed her sexuality in an essay she wrote in 1979. The couple tied the knot in 1994, officiated by two gay men, and have two adult children. Their decision to explore other relationships came after a night of binge-watching television at their Brooklyn home.

When asked about their unconventional arrangement, de Blasio shared one of his wife’s favorite quotes: “Labels put people in boxes, and those boxes are shaped like coffins.”

McCray seems excited about entering the dating scene, even jokingly suggesting to the New York Times reporter to include her phone number in the profile.
