Biden warns ‘MAGA Republicans’ may use default to harm his reelection.

House Republicans Could Use Default to Win White House, Says President Biden

President Joe Biden has warned that House Republicans could use a debt ceiling default as a political tool to win the White House next year. Speaking at a press conference during the Group of Seven meetings in Hiroshima, Biden said that a default could be a political win for “MAGA Republicans.”

Sticking Points: Biden Mulls Student Loans and Climate Change in Debt Ceiling Talks

“There are some MAGA Republicans in the House who know the damage that [default] would do to the economy,” he said. “And because I am president, and a president is responsible for everything, Biden would take the blame, and that’s the one way to make sure Biden is not reelected.”

Biden has committed to raising the debt limit to avoid default, but he has also said that he cannot guarantee what House Republicans will do. He plans to talk to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on the plane ride back to Washington.

When asked if he would be blameless if the United States defaulted on its loans, Biden said, “On the merits, based on what I’ve offered, I would be blameless.” However, he acknowledged that on the politics of it, no one would be blameless.

What’s at Stake?

  • A debt ceiling default could have severe consequences for the US economy, including a potential recession.
  • House Republicans could use a default as a political tool to win the White House next year.
  • President Biden has committed to raising the debt limit to avoid default, but he cannot guarantee what House Republicans will do.

It remains to be seen how the debt ceiling talks will play out, but one thing is clear: the stakes are high for the US economy and the political future of the country.
