President Biden Raises Concerns on Human Rights Abuse and Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping
During a post-Xi summit press conference, President Joe Biden emphasized that he did not shy away from addressing critical issues with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He stated, “As I always do, I raised areas where the United States has concerns about the [People’s Republic of China] actions, including detained and exit-banned U.S. citizens, human rights, and coercive activities in the South China Sea.”
Biden further revealed that he provided Xi with the names of individuals believed to be held captive, expressing hope for their release. However, no agreement was reached on this matter.
The President also stressed the significance of China refraining from interfering in Taiwan’s upcoming elections in January, emphasizing the need for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He affirmed the United States’ commitment to the One China policy, stating, “I’m not going to change that. That’s not going to change, and that’s about the extent to which we discussed it.”
Regarding trust in Xi, Biden cautiously replied, “but verify,” acknowledging their differing views but acknowledging Xi’s straightforwardness. He stated, “We have disagreements. He has a different view than I have on a lot of things, but he’s been straight. I don’t mean that as good, bad, or indifferent, but he’s just been straight.”
