12 shot after SUV pulls up and opens fire on a crowd, Chicago police say

On Friday night in Chicago, at least 12 people were injured by gunfire during an incident involving an SUV on the South Side. The SUV pulled up and two males inside opened fire, after which the vehicle fled the scene. Two of those shot remained in critical condition, one with a gunshot to the thigh. In total,21 people have been shot across the city since Friday evening,resulting in four fatalities. Among the victims were eight men and four women aged 17 to 47, with some refusing medical treatment. The police responded to initial reports of gunfire that left a woman and a man wounded, both in fair condition, as they investigated further. the shootings coincided with Juneteenth celebrations and the opening of barack Obama’s presidential center in Chicago, turning a holiday typically associated with festivity into a tragedy. Local advocates criticized the violence, noting the stark contrast between the holiday’s meaning and the ongoing gun violence in the city.


CHICAGO (AP) — At least 12 people in a crowd on a Chicago street suffered gunshot wounds after an SUV pulled up and two people inside started shooting, police said.

The SUV drove away from the South Side neighborhood, leaving two people, both male, in critical condition following the shooting late Friday, police said in a news release. One suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh.

The eight men and four women in the group ranged in age from 17 to 47. They were being treated at four hospitals.

Police said another man suffered unknown injuries and refused medical treatment.

Police initially responded to a call of one person shot, and found a woman with two gunshot wounds to her back and a man with four graze wounds to his back. Both were listed in fair condition.

Detectives were investigating.

Police reported at least 21 people shot in the city since Friday evening, resulting in four deaths.

The shootings happened on Juneteenth, a holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. Earlier Friday, former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama welcomed the first visitors to his presidential center on the South Side.

Pastor Donovan Price, a local advocate for gun crime victims, told CBS News that seeing a mass shooting like this on the holiday is a tragedy.

“It should be celebrating,” he said. “Fireworks should not turn into gunshots.”
