Wyoming Senator Says There Are ‘Not Enough Democrats’ To Help Liz Cheney Win Primary

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) said Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is unlikely to win her primary battle, claiming there are “not enough Democrats” to help her.

Barrasso shared the comments on “Fox News Sunday” with host Mike Emanuel concerning Cheney’s strong views regarding the events of January 6, 2021, and her role on the House select committee.

“Wyoming politics is very personal. It’s face-to-face. It’s town to town,” Barrasso said. “The travel that I have done around the state, I think she has a lot of work to do if she hopes to win the primary.”

Cheney has also become a controversial primary target over her vote to impeach former President Donald Trump following the assault on the U.S. Capitol. Trump has endorsed Republican challenger Harriet Hageman against Cheney in Wyoming’s primary.

“There’s really not that many Democrats out there,” Barrasso told Emanuel. “Even the chairman of the Democratic Party said there are not enough Democrats to do that.”

Last month, The New York Times reported that Cheney’s campaign had sent mailers to Wyoming Democrats providing specific instructions on how people could switch their voter affiliation and vote for her in the August GOP primary.

“Liz Cheney told The New York Times that she wouldn’t be encouraging Democrats to raid the Republican primary, but I guess the drive to hold onto power is just too strong for her to keep her word,” Hageman’s campaign manager Carly Miller said. “What Cheney doesn’t understand is that Democrats will drop her like a bad habit after she’s no longer useful to them on the Jan. 6 committee.”

Wyoming’s primary is August 16. Early voting has already begun in the state.

In addition to addressing Cheney’s reelection bid, Barrasso also spoke in response to surging inflation across America.

“Families are really hurting all across the country. When talking to people around Wyoming in terms of inflation, they’re spending $100 a week more now than they were last year just to just to (sic) keep up,” he tweeted alongside footage from his interview.

The senator also blasted Democratic candidates who have refused to show up at events with President Joe Biden or be seen with him in recent weeks.

“You have candidates running as Democrats who just this past week in Ohio, the Senate and the Governor candidate refused to even show up or be seen when President Biden came to their state people are distancing themselves as Democrats from this administration,” Barrasso said.

Barrasso predicted inflation and other issues would drive voters to support Republicans during the midterms.

“I’m optimistic about the future election coming in November. The number one issue is inflation and in all the issues that people care about, they look to Republicans as the solution on inflation, energy, the economy, chaos at the border, & crime in our cities,” he added.
