Utah filmmaker Zach Kempf, along with a co-worker, initially mistook the gasoline being splashed on shrubs for water. However, their confusion quickly turned to alarm when they realized the woman was attempting to enter the house with a red can in hand.
“Which just seemed weird, so we asked her what she was doing, and she didn’t respond,” Kempf recounted, according to a New York Times report.
As the situation escalated, Kempf called 911 and bravely tried to prevent the woman from reaching the porch. He described the tense moment, saying, “It was a little scary there for a minute because we didn’t know who she was. We didn’t know if she had weapons on her or anything.”
With the woman persistently approaching the porch, Kempf stood his ground and blocked her path. Fortunately, help arrived in the form of visiting NYPD officers who were able to restrain the woman.
Reflecting on the incident, Kempf expressed relief that no harm came to the historic home but also voiced concern for the well-being of the woman involved. He said, “Obviously, the house is so important, and I’m really glad nothing happened to it. But I feel like now I’m mostly just concerned for her well-being.”
Jerry DeBerry, the Atlanta Fire Department’s battalion chief, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that if the witnesses hadn’t intervened, the house could have been engulfed in flames within seconds. He credited the timing and the presence of the courageous bystanders for averting a potential disaster.
The King Center released a statement expressing gratitude for the intervention of the good Samaritans and law enforcement. They also extended their prayers to the individual who allegedly committed the criminal act.

The motive behind Henderson’s attempted arson is still unclear. According to the police, she has made no statements regarding her intentions or potential motivations. However, her actions have raised concerns and highlighted the importance of protecting historical sites and symbols of civil rights.
