A woman suspected of carrying out a bomb attack in Monaco was found shot dead in Ukraine on Tuesday.

The woman, identified as 39-year-old Ukrainian national Anastasiia Berezovska, carried out a suspected assassination attempt against Ukrainian business tycoon Vadym Iermolaiev on June 30.

The body of Berezovska was discovered by the Ukrainian Security Service, known as the SBU, which said an officer in Ukraine’s military intelligence agency confessed to killing Berezovska without informing his superiors, Sky News reported. Her body was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the head alongside used pistol cartridge cases.

The Monaco attack wounded Iermolaiev, another woman, and a child, while sparking a manhunt across multiple countries. The identity of the woman and child remains unknown, according to the Independent.

The attack is the first bomb assassination attempt ever recorded in Monaco, one of the wealthiest places in the world.

Berezovska disguised herself as a man while carrying out the attack and fled to neighboring France, then to Italy in a rented car, according to CNN.

The SBU released an investigative statement, which has yet to be independently verified by outside sources. The SBU suffers from significant corruption, with the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine accusing SBU employees of illegally bugging and wiretapping the office of an anti-corruption detective, the Kyiv Independent reported. The Anti-Corruption Action Center has also accused the SBU of launching fabricated investigations against detectives, according to the Ukrainska Pravda.

The SBU statement said it established Berezovska’s movements and contacts, including connections she had with two men who allegedly transferred money to Berezovska.

The statement claims one of the men is a serving intelligence officer in Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, while the other formerly served in law enforcement.

The SBU alleges that both men transferred money to Berezovska’s bank accounts, implicating them as potential accomplices. The SBU said the suspected law enforcement accomplice had a basement resembling a torture chamber, and both suspects have been detained on suspicion of murder by prior conspiracy.

Iermolaiev’s estimated $225 million fortune stems from his company, the Alef Group, which is involved in real estate, agriculture, and vodka.

The businessman was sanctioned by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2023 over allegations that Iermolaiev’s alcohol business was stationed in Russian-occupied Crimea, which Iermolaiev denies.

Iermolaiev has no public statements that speak favorably of Russia and has publicly condemned the country’s war against Ukraine. However, his son, Artur Iermolaiev is a convicted criminal over allegations that he was the ringleader of a fraud scheme.

Iermolaiev is one of Ukraine’s wealthiest people and was an active member of Dnipro’s Jewish community. In 2019, Iermolaiev left his home country and became a citizen of Cyprus while residing in Monaco. He said he left Ukraine due to concerns about international protection.

“The Ukrainian judicial system, to put it mildly, is not perfect, and the tax system is not objective,” he said.

The motive behind the suspected attempted assassination remains unclear.
