The lawsuit was filed by the mother of an 11-year-old transgender student, a boy who identifies as a girl. The judge’s temporary restraining order prevents the district from excluding the boy from the girls’ bathroom. The order acknowledges that the boy has been using the girls’ bathroom since third grade and is now entering sixth grade. It also highlights the emotional and mental harm caused by the bathroom policy.

The student’s legal team expressed their satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating, “We are very pleased that the court recognized so clearly that our client’s rights were being violated and that immediate action was needed to protect her.” They are hopeful that this ruling will allow the student to enjoy the rest of her summer program.

The school district’s bathroom policy, known as the “Student Privacy in Restrooms and Locker Rooms,” was passed unanimously by the school board. However, exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis, with input from school staff, officials, parents, and the student.
