Police in Loudoun County, Virginia, arrived on the scene at 7:32 p.m. Sunday. The team said it was “aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family.”
Eric Bieniemy was training the football team in Missouri when the incident unfolded. He left the training camp to be with his wife and was not present for Monday’s practice. Bieniemy previously worked for the Washington Commanders as offensive coordinator before rejoining the Chiefs this year.
The shooting appeared to be committed by the couple’s son, Elijah Bieniemy, according to sports journalist Arye Pulli. The younger Bieniemy was arrested and charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding, and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling, per the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
The press release announcing Elijah Bieniemy’s arrest did not reveal his victim’s name. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on whether Elijah Bieniemy’s arrest was related to his mother’s attack.
