Why The College Football Playoff Committee Got It Right

There was a ton of attention paid to the release of the final college football playoff rankings yesterday as the committee decided to put Georgia, Michigan, TCU and Ohio State in the final playoff — and in that order from a seed perspective.

After all of the talk on whether Bama, Tennessee or Clemson should have made it, when you look at the very loose criteria the committee says they use with a mix of the ‘eye test,’ when it comes to the final four, I believe they got it right.

If you’re a fan of a team that got in, or got left out, you are going to side with your team and that’s expected. But if you want to get a true analysis, you have to take a sociopathic look at it — you can’t go with feelings or fall in love with brands.

We also have to be able to separate the teams that are deserving compared to those who may be favored by Vegas on a neutral field. In the case of Ohio State when compared to some that were left out, they lost one time all year to the number two team who went undefeated in Michigan, when you look at TCU they lost one time in an extra game in overtime.

Now compare those two teams with Bama — who lost twice, including a loss to a now four-loss LSU team — and their best quality win was against 20th ranked Texas, who TCU beat worse than Bama did.

Now if Bama played TCU on a neutral site I would take Bama, but you can’t make decisions based on hypotheticals when the most important metrics are so one sided.

Some of you will be upset at these picks because your team didn’t make it in. That’s okay. But to quote the great philosopher Lil Tunechi: “Men lie, women lie, but numbers don’t lie.”
