Within their first month in office, the Biden Administration made a bold commitment to combat the supposed “climate crisis” by aligning federal agencies with the Paris Agreement and Green New Deal. This move was swiftly followed by Congressional Democrats, who applauded the Administration’s plans to allocate taxpayer money towards a climate transition. These actions mirror the corporate activism seen on Wall Street through the ESG movement.
While Florida has been at the forefront of fighting against ESG in the financial sector, a new battle has emerged within the federal bureaucracy and along our roadways. The Biden Administration has politicized infrastructure investments, focusing on social and environmental justice instead of addressing congestion and improving transportation efficiency.
Florida’s Stand Against Overreach
Fortunately, Florida has the means to fight back against this overreach. With only 25 percent of transportation funds coming from the federal government, Florida has committed over $64 billion to infrastructure improvements over the next 5 years. Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature recognize the importance of transportation infrastructure and its positive impact on the state’s residents and businesses.
Recently, climate activists have criticized Florida’s decision to not participate in the ”Carbon Reduction” program of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This program would require states to submit strategies to reduce carbon emissions in transportation infrastructure. However, the lack of clear guidance from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) made it impossible for states to meet the arbitrary metrics set by the department.
In addition, USDOT issued a burdensome Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Rule, separate from the carbon reduction program, which requires states to set arbitrary CO2 emissions reduction targets. This rule lacks clear guidance on what constitutes success and imposes unnecessary costs on states.
Florida’s Commitment to Freedom and Infrastructure
Florida values freedom in transportation choices and is committed to leading in infrastructure policy and development. Governor DeSantis believes in creating a framework for individuals to succeed, rather than dictating their choices. The GHG rule and other policies imposed by the Biden Administration hinder the mission of transportation departments, which is to move people and goods safely and efficiently.
Thankfully, FDOT anticipated this overreach and opted out of legitimizing it. Environmental protection and stewardship are fundamental priorities in every FDOT project. Florida’s economy is thriving, its transportation networks are advancing, and its natural environment continues to flourish, thanks to the leadership of Floridians.
