Which two Republicans changed their vote to support Jordan?
Rep. Jim Jordan Gains Support in Bid for House Speaker
Despite losing some Republican votes, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) managed to gain the support of two GOP lawmakers who initially voted against him. Reps. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) and Victoria Spartz (R-IN) both switched their votes during the second round of voting on Wednesday.
LaMalfa’s Change of Heart
It was expected that Rep. LaMalfa would change his vote. In a statement, he explained that his decision was driven by his belief that recent events in Washington, D.C. were unjust. He expressed disappointment in the removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and emphasized that his vote for McCarthy did not reflect any negative opinion of Jordan.
“I spoke with Jim after the first vote to confirm my support going forward, and he was happy and understood,” LaMalfa stated. “I will look forward to casting a vote for him on the second ballot.”
Surprising Flip by Spartz
On the other hand, Rep. Spartz’s change of vote came as a surprise. Initially, she had planned to abstain or propose another candidate until Jordan resolved issues with fellow members. However, just hours before the vote, she criticized Jordan’s tactics and questioned his effectiveness as Judiciary Chair.
“Jim is elected by members and accountable to members from very diverse districts, so coercion and intimidation is not a good idea,” Spartz remarked. “Before you coronate Jim, please assess if he was effective for you or for McCarthy as Judiciary Chair.”
Despite the mixed support, Jordan remains a strong contender in the race for House Speaker.
