White House warns ICE protesters: ‘Play stupid games, win stupid prizes’

The White House warned protesters who oppose Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in New Jersey, saying enforcement “will not be deterred,” and adding “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes,” a line drawn from Taylor Swift’s “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince.”

The message came amid escalating tensions at Delaney Hall, a federal immigration detention facility in Newark that has become a focal point for demonstrations.Protesters have gathered outside to criticize ICE detention policies and alleged conditions inside the center, while DHS officials insist ICE officers are performing lawful duties and that interfering with operations will be prosecuted.

Protest groups and some officials have raised humanitarian concerns, including alleged inadequate medical care, physical abuse claims, and deaths in custody. DHS has rejected these allegations as “egregious,” accusing critics of spreading false information and calling them “sanctuary politicians” and “leftist activists.”

The White House issued a blunt warning to protesters opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in New Jersey, declaring in an X post that enforcement efforts “will not be deterred,” adding, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”

The phrase is notably a lyric from Taylor Swift‘s song “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince,” which appeared on her 2019 album Lover.

The post came amid escalating tensions surrounding demonstrations at Delaney Hall, a federal immigration detention facility in Newark that has become the focal point of protests by immigration advocates, local officials, and community activists.

In recent days, protesters have gathered outside the facility, criticizing ICE detention policies and the conditions inside the center.

Department of Homeland Security officials have said ICE officers are carrying out lawful duties and that attempts to interfere with operations will not be tolerated.

Protesters and advocacy groups have accused federal authorities of increasing enforcement activity while failing to address humanitarian concerns raised by detainees. Reported concerns include inadequate medical care, alleged physical abuse of detainees by ICE personnel, and deaths occurring in custody.

The Department of Homeland Security has vehemently denied the claims about Delaney Hall, calling them “egregious” and referring to their critics as “sanctuary politicians” and “leftist activists” who “have been spreading false information” about the ICE facility. The facility, which has long been used to house immigration detainees, has faced scrutiny from activists and elected officials who have called for the center to be shut down, for increased oversight, and reforms to the detention system.
