White House stands by COVID-19 vaccine mandate amid DeSantis plea for Djokovic

THe White House We voted Wednesday to approve a vaccination mandate for foreigners that would keep the tennis star at bay. Novak Djokovic Play in the Miami Open.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), wrote a letter addressed to the President Joe Biden This was earlier in the week asking for an exemption Djokovic might play at the Miami Open. It doesn’t seem that this will happen.

“I would refer you to the CDC, they are the ones who deal with that,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre Responding to a reporter’s question. “It’s still in place, and we expect everyone to abide by our country’s rule, whether as a participant or a spectator.”

DeSantis was a possible 2024 presidential candidate and called the mandate “unscientific.”

“The only thing keeping Mr. Djokovic from participating in this tournament is your administration’s continued enforcement of a misguided, unscientific, and out-of-date COVID-19 vaccination requirement for foreign guests seeking to visit our great country,” DeSantis sent a letter to the Washington Examiner.

DeSantis asked that Djokovic be stopped from entering Florida by boat by the Biden administration by March 10. DeSantis also noted in a footnote the Oct. 25, 2021 Proclamation by Biden “governs the entry into the United States of noncitizen nonimmigrants … by air. ”

“Your administration does not appear to have issued analogous restrictions for non-U.S. individuals seeking to enter our country by boat,” He also added a footnote.

Djokovic, who was barred from last year’s Australian Open tournament because he refused to get the COVID-19 shot, won the Australian Open earlier this year. Djokovic recently withdrew his participation in the Indian Wells tournament.

Djokovic was denied entry to the United States to participate in the Miami Open.
