President Biden to Tout Bipartisanship in Debt Ceiling Deal Address

The president will tout bipartisanship during his Friday night address and could sign the debt ceiling deal into law as soon as Saturday.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre previewed President Joe Biden’s remarks during the afternoon news briefing, saying the deal averts disaster and keeps the country on a safe financial footing.

“America is a nation that pays its bill and meets its obligations, and it always will be,” she said. “It is a testament to the president’s strength that more Democrats than Republicans in both houses of Congress voted for this bill.”

The Senate passed the bill Thursday night, meaning the debt limit will be raised ahead of the June 5 deadline. Biden has scheduled an address at 7 p.m. on Friday.

“The work is far from finished, but this bipartisan agreement is a reminder of what’s possible when we act in the best interests of our country,” Jean-Pierre said.

The president’s remarks will be made in the Oval Office, and the prime time slot showcases how important the deal was, she added.

Biden has already released his own statement praising the deal and the congressional leaders who forged it.

The bill passed the House earlier this week by a vote of 314 to 117, with majorities of both conferences voting in favor. In both chambers, proponents comfortably overcame a Left-Right coalition against the bill. Conservatives thought it didn’t go far enough in restraining federal spending, while liberals thought it went too far.

Not everyone agrees that Biden was a bipartisan dealmaker. The Republican National Committee released a statement saying the president backed into the deal against his wishes.

“Biden didn’t bring anyone together,” said RNC spokesman Tommy Pigott. “He was forced kicking and screaming to negotiations. He only proved once again why he is a failed president.”

As far as the timeline for signing the deal into law, Jean-Pierre said that could happen as soon as Saturday.

“It won’t be today,” she said. “The House and the Senate have to do their business, and so we’re going to work very quickly with them to get this done, to make sure we can sign it, hopefully as soon as tomorrow.”
