White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has addressed the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise. During an interview Wednesday, she called the attack a horrific crime. She said the administration is gathering details and working closely with the U.S. Embassy in the Caribbean country.

Psaki went on to say the U.S. stands with Haiti, adding it’s important that the people of Haiti know that. Her remarks came after Claude Joseph, the Interim Haitian Prime Minister, confirmed Wednesday that Moise had been shot dead by unidentified attackers.

Politically linked violence has been on rise in the impoverished nation as it faces a growing humanitarian crisis and food shortages. Gang-related violence has also been present in the capital with police seen battling rivals in the streets.

Moise took office back in 2017 and was most recently facing accusations of becoming a dictator by overstaying his mandate. First Lady Martine Moise was also shot in the overnight attack, yet survived and is being hospitalized.
