The White House Denies Allegations of Political Motivation in Decision to Keep Space Command in Colorado
The White House has firmly denied allegations made by Alabama legislators that President Joe Biden’s choice to maintain Space Command’s headquarters in Colorado was driven by political motives. The decision, confirmed by National Security Council officials on Monday, puts an end to years of speculation surrounding the fate of former President Donald Trump’s last-minute agreement to relocate the permanent headquarters to Huntsville, Alabama.
“The deciding factor for President Biden in deciding to keep Space Command in Colorado Springs was operational readiness, pure and simple,” stated NSC Coordinator John Kirby. “It had nothing to do with Sen. Tuberville’s holds, had nothing to do with partisan politics, had everything to do with making sure that Space Command, in an undisrupted way, continue to operate at peak readiness levels in what is one of the most critical domains across the spectrum of your domains in that space.”
Despite the White House’s explanation, both Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, swiftly criticized President Biden’s decision.
“It’s clear that far-left politics, not national security, was the driving force behind this decision,” Rogers said. “The Biden administration’s shameful delay to finalize the permanent basing decision for U.S. Space Command warranted the opening of a Congressional investigation. I will continue this investigation to see if they intentionally misled the Armed Services Committee on their deliberate taxpayer-funded manipulation of the selection process.”
A senior administration official informed the Washington Examiner that U.S. Space Command headquarters will achieve “full operational capability” in the coming weeks. In contrast, relocating it to Alabama would result in its opening in the early-to-mid 2030s, a risk deemed “unacceptable” by President Biden.
Sen. Tuberville remains determined to fight for Huntsville, Alabama as the best location for Space Command. He stated, “This is absolutely not over. I will continue to fight this as long as it takes to bring Space Command where it would be best served. Today’s disastrous mistake just adds to the long string of bad decisions that this compromised President has made. He is batting 1000 in that category since taking office.”
It is worth noting that Sen. Tuberville has been engaged in a standoff with the Department of Defense and the Biden administration for approximately six months over a policy related to abortion. The senator has placed holds on around 300 promotions and nominations, citing the policy’s impact on military readiness and the families of service members.
NSC Coordinator John Kirby clarified that Tuberville’s hold did not influence President Biden’s decision to keep Space Command in Colorado.
