White House unsure about China’s Taiwan plans.

White House Press Secretary Declines to Comment on China’s Commitment to Taiwan

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to say Monday if the Biden administration believes China is “committed to the status quo with Taiwan,” noting only the United States’s commitment to stability in the region and the decades-old One China policy.

Jean-Pierre’s comments come as Secretary of State Antony Blinken is meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other officials in Beijing.

Blinken, and Jean-Pierre, said Monday that, thus far, the meetings have been “constructive.” Xi also indicated the meetings were productive and could lead to a potential thawing in tensions between the two countries.

“This president and this administration have been very clear that diplomacy is really part of what’s important to the American interest and how it’s also finding a way to work together,” Jean-Pierre told reporters traveling with President Joe Biden to California Monday afternoon.

Jean-Pierre added that Biden has not yet spoken with Blinken about the meetings but will receive a full briefing when both are back in Washington, D.C., later this week. She also declined to say if the U.S. and China had made progress on setting up a meeting for Biden and Xi in the immediate future.

The Biden administration has spent recent months courting allies in the region as Beijing seeks to expand its sphere of influence and takes an increasingly militant line on Taiwan.

Jean-Pierre declined to say Monday if Blinken’s meetings had produced any new insights into Chinese thinking about Taiwan.

“I can’t speak to China. I can only speak to where we are. I think the secretary spoke, underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and reiterated there has been no change to the longstanding U.S. One China policy. I can speak for us, for the U.S., I’m not going to speak on behalf of China.”
