Riley Gaines stands up to Sen. Dick Durbin, questioning his allegiance to trans activists.

Former NCAA Swimmer Riley Gaines Calls Out Sen. Dick Durbin for Prioritizing Trans-Identifying Males Over Women and Girls

During a hearing titled “Defending the Civil Rights of LGBTQ+ Americans,” former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines confronted Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) for his stance on protecting the feelings of trans-identifying males at the expense of biological women and girls.

Gaines appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee and shared her personal experience competing against trans-identifying swimmer Lia Thomas. She specifically addressed Chairman Durbin’s comments about sending the right “message” to trans-identifying individuals.

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) asked Gaines to describe the experience of competing against Thomas while also having to share a locker room with a biological male. Gaines explained that she and the other female swimmers were caught off guard by the situation. When she raised her concerns with officials, they dismissed her and revealed that they had made all the locker rooms “unisex” to bypass the rules.

“By acknowledging that you had to change the rules to make the locker rooms unisex, you have admitted that this individual is male,” Gaines responded. She then realized that any male, regardless of their identity, could enter the locker room and observe the girls as they changed into their racing suits.

“They easily dismissed our rights to privacy,” Gaines continued, directing her attention to Durbin. “Senator Durbin, you mentioned the message it sends to trans individuals in your opening statement. But what message does it send to women? To young girls who are denied these opportunities?”

“Our rights to privacy and safety were thrown out the window to protect a small population, to protect one group’s happiness,” Gaines passionately expressed. “What about us? That was the overwhelming sentiment in that locker room.”
