Report reveals buyer of $1B land near Air Force Base.
Massive California Land Purchase Reveals Plans for New City
After months of speculation, the mystery behind a massive California land purchase near Travis Air Force Base has been partially unveiled. Flannery Associates, a group of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and investors, has emerged as the buyer of nearly $1 billion worth of real estate in Solano County.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Flannery Associates intends to create a new city on tens of thousands of acres, offering good-paying jobs, affordable housing, clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, and ample open space. Brian Brokaw, a spokesman for the group, expressed excitement about collaborating with residents, elected officials, and Travis Air Force Base to make this vision a reality.
Notable Investors and Land Acquisitions
The New York Times revealed that billionaire venture capitalist Michael Moritz played a key role in recruiting investors for the land purchases. The report listed prominent figures such as Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn; Marc Andreessen and Chris Dixon, venture capitalists; Patrick and John Collison, founders of Stripe; Laurene Powell Jobs, founder of the Emerson Collective; and Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, entrepreneurs turned investors.
Jan Sramek, a former Goldman Sachs trader, has been leading the operational side of the project as the group acquired vast amounts of land.
Community Skepticism and Concerns
While the proposed plans for the new city include thousands of homes, a solar energy farm, orchards, and expansive parks, some remain skeptical. Solano County Mayor Catherine Moy expressed concerns about the region’s poor infrastructure, regular droughts, and high risk of wildfires.
Democratic Rep. John Garamendi, who represents the area, voiced frustration over the lack of transparency surrounding the land purchases. He emphasized the need for the group to address community concerns about transportation, water, sanitation, and environmental impact, particularly in relation to the operational security of Travis Air Force Base.
As the project moves forward, Flannery Associates will need to establish trust within the community and provide specific plans and assurances to ensure the base’s security is not compromised.
