This isn’t the first time Maddow has used this reasoning to justify her network’s avoidance of Trump, who is currently the frontrunner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. In June, as Trump faced his first federal indictment, Maddow claimed, “We are here to bring you the news. It hurts our ability to do that if we live-broadcast what we fully expect in advance to be a litany of lies and false accusations—no matter who says them.”
However, Maddow’s assertion that MSNBC refrains from spreading falsehoods is simply not true. Both she and her network have repeatedly disseminated lies and false accusations as news, particularly when it comes to Trump.
For instance, MSNBC effectively endorsed the claims that Jussie Smollett was the victim of a hate crime perpetrated by supporters of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. They also propagated the notion that COVID-19 vaccines prevent transmission, despite the lack of conclusive evidence. Additionally, they dismissed the “lab leak” theory of COVID-19 origin, even though it has not been definitively debunked. MSNBC also perpetuated the narrative that Trump colluded with Russia to win the presidency, spread the idea that the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop were Russian “disinformation,” and denied any involvement of President Joe Biden in his son’s corrupt foreign business dealings.
Maddow attempted to assure viewers that MSNBC’s decision to skip Trump’s victory speech was not driven by spite. However, the network’s track record suggests otherwise.

Additionally, Maddow herself has been involved in several instances of spreading misleading or false information. One notable example was her reporting on the Trump-Russia collusion investigation. For months, Maddow hyped up the case, claiming to possess bombshell evidence that would take down the President. However, when the evidence was finally revealed, it fell far short of the grand claims Maddow had made. This incident, among others, calls into question Maddow’s credibility and raises doubts about her ability to accurately judge what is true or untrue. Furthermore, MSNBC’s coverage of certain political events and figures has demonstrated a clear bias. The network has been accused of favoring progressive viewpoints while downplaying or disregarding conservative voices. This bias is evidenced in their reporting of issues such as immigration, healthcare, and gun control. By ignoring or marginalizing alternative viewpoints, MSNBC effectively shapes the narrative to fit its own agenda, thereby misleading viewers and perpetuating false information.
