WATCH: Police Dashcam Footage Shows Michigan Lawmaker Threatening Officers During Alleged Drunk-Driving Incident

Democratic state Rep. Jewell Jones of Michigan was caught on police dashcam fighting with officers and threatening to call Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer after crashing his car into a ditch.

Jones, 26, was reportedly drunk at the time of the accident, measuring a blood-alcohol content over .17, more than twice the legal limit in Michigan. The lawmakers is also accused of assaulting paramedics and officers that responded to the crash.

On Sunday, police released dashcam footage from April 6 of officers apprehending Jones. The footage shows Jones arguing with officers and refusing to identify himself before officers wrestle him to the ground. The lawmaker then appears to threaten the officers with reporting them to the governor and using his authority as a state lawmaker to slash police funding.

“It’s not going to be good for you. I run you all’s budget, bro,” Jones can be heard telling the officers after they tackle him to the ground. “When I call Gretchen, I’ll need y’all IDs and badge numbers, everything.”

“I’ll call Governor Whitmer right now. Just let me get up. I’m a state rep. I’m going to give it to you,” Jones says.

Police said they used a taser twice on the Michigan lawmaker as well as pepper spray while subduing him. Officers found a gun in the cupholder of Jones’ Chevy Tahoe.

Jones attorney Ali Hammoud responded to the arrest in a statement to NBC News:

In a lengthy statement, Jones’ attorney, Ali Hammoud, called his client a dedicated public servant, denied the lawmaker resisted arrest and insisted “he was not threatening the officers in any way.”

“He was fully cooperative,” Hammoud said. “The officers decided to throw Representative Jones to the ground and three of them held him down, crushing him under their weight. The officers also tased Representative Jones in his head, causing memory loss and leaving scars that are visible to this day. They used so much pepper spray on his face that his eyes still appear profoundly red and swollen.”

When asked if Jones dropped Whitmer’s name or mentioned the state police budget during the April 6 encounter, Hammoud didn’t completely discount that police narrative.

“Anything he said regarding budgets and the governor was an attempt to stop them from using excessive force,” Hammoud told NBC News.

Jones has been charged with resisting arrest, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and possessing a firearm while intoxicated. He faces a minimum two-year prison sentence, according to Fox News.

The Daily Wire reported on Jones arrest last week:

A Michigan Democrat who serves as the state’s Democratic vice chairman of the House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee, threatened state police that he would alert Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D), adding that he ran the state’s police budget, before he was charged with driving drunk and resisting police officers.

On April 6, Rep. Jewell Jones, who is serving his third term as a state legislator and the youngest-ever representative elected to serve in the state House, was reportedly driving his Chevy Tahoe and weaving in and out of lanes, then rolled into a ditch, The Detroit News reported.

“For almost 50 miles, witnesses reported, the vehicle with the vanity plate ‘ELECTED’ was driving so recklessly earlier this month that at least one person saw the car go the wrong way before it rolled into a ditch,” The Washington Post added.
