At 83 years old, Nancy Pelosi, the former Democratic House speaker, has made an exciting announcement. She revealed her decision to run for reelection in 2024, emphasizing the importance of promoting “the values of San Francisco.”
Pelosi took to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to confirm her decision, sharing the news with her followers.
Last November, Pelosi stepped down as speaker of the House, expressing her belief that it was time for a new generation to lead the Democratic Caucus. However, she remained committed to serving out her term and did not provide definitive statements about her future plans. Born in 1940, Pelosi is currently the ninth-oldest member of Congress.
Throughout the past months, Pelosi has kept her political future under wraps. In an interview with Politico, she stated, ”I haven’t been thinking much about [retirement]—yet,” but added, “But I will. When I need to, I will.”
Americans’ Concerns About Aging Political Leaders
Recent polls have shown that many Americans are frustrated with the advanced age of their political leaders. According to an AP-NORC poll, 77 percent of Americans believe that President Joe Biden, who is three years younger than Pelosi, is unable to “effectively serve” for another four years due to his age. Similarly, a CBS News poll found that 73 percent of Americans believe there should be a maximum age cap for elected officials.
Pelosi has been a vocal defender of her aging Democratic colleagues. She recently spoke out against calls for 90-year-old California Senator Dianne Feinstein to retire, suggesting that such demands are rooted in sexism. Reports have indicated that Feinstein is experiencing mental decline. Pelosi has also criticized conservatives who question Biden’s fitness for the presidency due to his age, dismissing such concerns and referring to Biden as a ”kid.”
