Mama June Opens Up About Daughter’s Terminal Cancer Diagnosis
June Shannon, star of “Mama June: From Not to Hot,” has revealed that she and her family are facing a heartbreaking reality. Her eldest daughter, Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 adrenal carcinoma.
According to Shannon, they have come to terms with the fact that Cardwell’s condition is terminal. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Shannon said, “She’s Stage 4. She’s not gonna go into remission. We’ve all accepted that, so I just tell people, ‘one day at a time,’ ’cause you never know.”
“There’s days where I don’t know (whether) to scream, get mad, or be happy,” Shannon expressed during her ET interview.
“As her mom, we’ve had talks you don’t want to have with your child. We know what the endgame is and we are prepared for that. You’re never prepared, but we know what could happen,” she added.
In another interview with ETOnline, Shannon mentioned that Cardwell is currently handling her diagnosis remarkably well. Despite the challenges, Cardwell is still able to carry out daily activities such as going to the grocery store and driving herself and her children around.
However, the physical effects of the cancer are evident. Cardwell has lost her hair, eyebrows, and body hair due to the aggressive nature of the disease.
After undergoing four rounds of chemotherapy, Cardwell’s next steps remain uncertain. Shannon explained, “She just wants to see how it’s gonna go. We don’t know what to expect because the cancer is very aggressive and it grew from nothing to something huge on the left side of her body really fast.”
Despite the difficult circumstances, there is always hope. Shannon’s daughter Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird expressed optimism, saying, “Honestly, who’s not to say a year from now they’ll have a cure? The medical field is growing every single day. There’s always something.”
A Tragic Past
Cardwell’s journey has been marked by tragedy. She was molested as a child by a former boyfriend of her mother, which led to their estrangement and the cancellation of their family’s first series, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.”
Reflecting on the traumatic experience, Cardwell said, “When we first met him, he was very, very nice, treated all of us girls right. And then, all of a sudden, one day, he just rubbed my leg. And then all of a sudden, it just started progressing a little closer to my areas. And then I realized, OK, something’s going on.”
Despite the challenges she has faced, Cardwell remains strong. The family is rallying around her, hoping for a breakthrough in cancer treatment and a brighter future.
