WATCH LIVE: White House holds press briefing after court blocks Trump’s sweeping tariffs

The White House is hosting a press briefing led by press secretary Karoline Leavitt following a ruling from the U.S. Court of International Trade that invalidated President Donald Trump’s extensive tariffs, imposed on April 2. The press conference is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The court decision steadfast that Trump’s authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 does not extend to the imposition of unlimited tariffs on goods from various countries. This ruling was supported by a panel consisting of two judges appointed by President Obama and one by Trump, and they emphasized that such unbounded authority is not granted by the act. Trump and his supporters have publicly criticized the ruling.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled that Trump didn’t have the authority to impose the April 2 tariffs.

COURT BLOCKS ‘LIBERATION DAY’ TARIFFS, TRUMP APPEALS

“The question in the two cases before the court is whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (‘IEEPA’) delegates these powers to the President in the form of authority to impose unlimited tariffs on goods from nearly every country in the world,” said the panel consisting of two Obama appointees and one Trump appointee. “The court does not read IEEPA to confer such unbounded authority and sets aside the challenged tariffs imposed thereunder.”

Trump and his allies quickly condemned the decision.
