A shocking incident unfolded in Maryland last week when a 27-year-old man, Flavio Cesar Lanuza, stole a Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration truck and wreaked havoc on the roads. Lanuza, an illegal alien from Nicaragua, went on a rampage, crashing into more than a dozen cars.
Lanuza was apprehended by Maryland State Police and is now facing charges of vehicle theft and first-degree assault. Investigators believe that additional charges will be filed soon.

Darius Reeves, from the Baltimore office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), revealed that Lanuza had been encountered at the U.S. border. However, he provided officials with a false address that did not match any location in Maryland.
Reeves expressed concern over how Lanuza ended up in Maryland, particularly in Montgomery County, a sanctuary county known for its lenient approach towards illegal alien criminals. ICE has issued a detainer request for Lanuza, but it remains uncertain if the county will cooperate.
“County executives are taking an independent and personal view of how to cooperate with ICE, which means they’re not going to cooperate with ICE at all,” Reeves explained.
Despite ICE issuing 119 detainers in fiscal year 2024, none have been honored by Montgomery County.

Ira Mehlman, a representative from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), urged Montgomery County to honor the detainer request for Lanuza. Mehlman emphasized the importance of protecting the community by deporting individuals who pose a threat.
“They shouldn’t be in the country simply because they’ve violated our immigration laws, but clearly, once somebody has taken that additional threat and posed a threat or danger, then the local jurisdiction in the interest of protecting their own communities should be more than willing to cooperate,” Mehlman stated.

The incident began when Maryland State Police responded to a hit-and-run involving a Ford Ranger and four vehicles. The Maryland DOT State Highway Administration truck arrived at the scene to check on the driver’s well-being. However, the driver exited the vehicle and stole the government truck.
Behind the wheel of the stolen truck, Lanuza rammed into a Maryland State Police vehicle and collided with numerous civilian vehicles while attempting to evade law enforcement. Shockingly, he even drove into oncoming traffic at times.
According to Maryland State Police, the suspect struck a total of 13 vehicles, resulting in injuries to a civilian, a Maryland state trooper, and a Montgomery County Police officer. All three were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
