Washington Post criticized for ‘perverse’ Memorial Day front page.

Washington Post Under Fire for Memorial Day Front Page

The Washington Post has come under criticism for its Memorial Day edition, which failed to pay tribute to Americans who have died for their country. Instead, the newspaper chose to feature a long, emotional story about families who have lost loved ones fighting overseas. While the topic itself is not terrible, it was not the American flag they were fighting under, and that should infuriate Americans who know what Memorial Day is all about.

As a holiday devoted to honoring American dead who gave their lives for American freedom, it is appalling that the Post chose to focus on a foreign conflict. Even worse, it is insulting. The lead article for Memorial Day was a 2,300-plus-word look at families and other survivors of Americans who have died in Ukraine, fighting on the side of the Kyiv government against Vladimir Putin’s Russian invasion.

While the Post had other, much more appropriate Memorial Day material elsewhere, the choice of subject for the lead article was a perverse one. The article stated that America’s most recent wars “fade into history,” which is not true, as it has not even been two full years since the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The top priority of Americans marking the Memorial Day holiday should be honoring Americans and those who have died for the American cause. The Post should take a look at its priorities again.

Twitter Reacts

Many Twitter users were quick to criticize the Post’s decision:

It is important to note that this is not to disparage the subjects of the Post’s piece. Any man or woman willing to put life and limb at risk for the cause of freedom deserves to be honored. Those who give their lives deserve to be remembered. However, Memorial Day is set aside specifically for the heroes who have given their lives for American citizens and American values.

Even President Joe Biden understood this, stating in his Memorial Day proclamation, “On Memorial Day, we honor America’s beloved daughters and sons who gave their last full measure of devotion to this Nation.”

The Western Journal calls on the Post to reconsider its priorities and honor those who have given their lives for American freedom.
