“Gov. Newsom made that statement while flanked by at least four armed guards,” Fox News Digital was informed Tuesday by Amy Hunter, NRA director for media relations. “That is the definition of hypocrisy.” 

Newsom replied to the tweet on Wednesday, saying: “People were just gunned down at a dance club and their workplace — and THIS is your response,” He spoke of the shootings in Monterey Park on Monday and one in Half Moon Bay Monday, in which seven people were killed at work. “I look forward to the day your trash organization is obsolete.”

The NRA replied via Twitter to say that it was pointing out a double-standard. 

“Respectfully, trash politicians usually squeal when their double standards are called out,” The group has posted online. “You surround yourself with armed security while denying good Californians their fundamental right to defend themselves and their families.”

Newsom discussed gun rights in his interview. However, he noted that Congress has not made any progress in addressing firearms access, despite the increase in mass shootings in recent decades. 

“The Second AmendmentIt feels like it is becoming a suicide agreement,” he stated. “California’s 37% lower gun death rate of the rest of the nation, and yet, with all that evidence, no one on the other side seems to give a d–n.”

California has some of most restrictive gun laws in the country. Advocate groups consistently rank California as one of the top states for gun safety. California has mandatory background checks and waiting periods for firearm purchases. Military-style weapons are also banned.
