Walmart to cut nearly 1,500 jobs in major restructuring

Walmart will be cutting almost 1,500 corporate jobs, according to a memo sent to employees Wednesday.

U.S. Chief Executive Officer John Furner and Chief Technology Officer Suresh Kumar notified corporate employees that the company would be reducing roles in the technology, advertising, and e-commerce teams. Walmart spokesperson Jami Lamontagne said the workers affected would keep their jobs until August, according to Axios

The memo, seen by the Washington Examiner, also said the company would be adding some new jobs in addition to the cuts as it works to “adapt to the changing environment.” The memo said Walmart will be “working closely” with those laid off on securing future employment, suggesting there may be other opportunities within the company.

Walmart announced in February that it would be laying off some non-store employees, but did not say who would be affected or how many jobs would be cut.

The company is the largest private employer in the country, employing about 1.6 million people in the United States at this time. It cited cutting costs and keeping up with ever-changing technological advances as the main reasons for the layoffs.

Walmart also laid off e-commerce team members in 2023, and last year, the company asked remote workers to relocate to locations from which it is now letting go of employees. There were also layoffs at Walmart in 2024, around the same time they started asking the other employees to relocate.

WHITE HOUSE HITS OUT AT WALMART OVER TARIFF-RELATED PRICE HIKES

Walmart got into a back and forth with President Donald Trump earlier in May over tariffs after the company announced a price hike, saying even the recently reduced tariffs were still too high to keep costs down. Trump posted on his Truth Social that the company should “EAT THE TARIFFS.”

Quickly pivoting, Walmart pledged to keep prices low.
