Virginia School Official Aware That 6-Year-Old May Have Been Armed Before Teacher Was Shot, Superintendent Says

A Virginia Before a teacher was, a school administrator knew about a possible weapon on campus. A 6-year-old shot the photo, according to the school’s superintendent. 

George Parker, Superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, told parents Thursday evening “at least one” Before Abigail Zwerner, first grade teacher, was killed last week, a school official knew of a possible gun on Richneck Elementary School’s campus.

“At least one administrator was notified of a possible weapon in the timeline that we’re reviewing and was aware that that student had, there was a potential that there was a weapon on campus,” Parker shared his thoughts with parents during a meeting. According WAVY-TV footage.

Zwerner is stable after being shot in his chest while trying to seize a weapon from a student. Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew stated that the shooting took place on Friday. Zwerner was trying to seize a weapon from a student. Was “intentional” This is no accident.  

Zwerner was accused of shooting Zwerner in the backpack. The backpack was apparently searched prior to the shooting but no weapons were discovered. Parker stated that the school may require students to use clear plastic backpacks after the shooting. 

The superintendent said that he was also consulting with Uvalde Texas school officials to improve school safety. “We’ve been in contact with Uvalde in Texas who have been very gracious in communicating with us,” He told his parents. 

Last week’s incident was the Third shooting The last three years have been very difficult for the Virginia school system. Two people were injured at Heritage High School and one died at Menchville High School. 

The district will install metal detectors in schools as a response. This move has been applauded by some parents. “Metal detectors in every school and every single entryway is a step. Empowering our teachers to take back their classrooms and get rid of disruptive students is a start. But once again, it comes back to the culture. If the teachers don’t feel like they’re being heard and if the teachers and the students don’t feel safe, they can’t teach and they can’t learn,” Tom Aman, parent Telled 10 for Your Side.

The 6-year old student is unlikely to face any criminal charges, but experts say his mom might, according to NBC News.
