Conservatives are trying to catch up on what was until recently an under-the radar campaign to elect liberal prosecutors, an effort which led to progressive district attorney everywhere from San Francisco and Philadelphia.
“You have a lot of these left-wing special interest groups that will come in and they’ve learned a very smart tactic,” Miyares said the Washington Examiner In an interview this week. “They’ve realized, ‘I don’t have to win a governor’s mansion. I don’t have to change control of my state Senate or my state assembly. I’ve just got to go into certain areas, I’ve got to elect very left-wing social justice warriors as these prosecutors.’”
Miyares stated that liberal groups can make small donations to district attorney races, up to $100,000. “a huge impact” On the direction of law enforcement within a jurisdiction.
Some areas have seen a rapid rise in crime.
Miyares is the chair of Protecting Americans Action Fund. This political organization seeks to correct an imbalance in prosecutor campaigns over many years.

Some of those prosecutors made controversial decisions.
The Soros-backed district attorneys in Portland, Oregon are an example.

The majority of cases involving rioters who damaged parts of the city several months prior to taking office in 2020 were dropped shortly after their arrival.
Progressive DAs also stopped prosecuting certain types of crimes and sought lighter punishments than their predecessors when they were charged with more serious offenses.
Miyares stated that his team “realized … that there was a vacuum.”
“We realized there was not another organization dedicated to elect these kind of commonsense prosecutors,” He said.
Protecting Americans Action Fund with its partner non-profit group, The Protecting Americans Fund, raised $4,000,000 in 2022 to support prosecutor races. The group invested in more than 12 races and changed five districts attorney offices from liberal-to-conservative.

Republicans still have a lot of work to do to improve their influence on the critical number district attorney offices. The midterm election saw GOP candidates focusing more on crime, sometimes using the far-left position of the district attorneys to counter that.
Former Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York mounted a strong challenge for Democratic Gov. Kathy Kochul was defeated in the gubernatorial contest partly because of her association with Alvin Bragg, Manhattan District Attorney. Critics have accused Bragg of causing more crime in New York.
Some state leaders can remove prosecutors who refuse to enforce certain laws.

In other states, like Virginia, governors are limited in their ability to challenge decisions made by liberal district lawyers.
Miyares stated that Republicans should talk about the emotional harm that crime can cause, and not just repeat statistics.

“I think it is so important to talk about … the victims in it,” He said. “I think sometimes, candidly, Republican candidates can sound like accountants, and they don’t talk about the real impact these types of cases can have on individuals.”
“Don’t talk about the rise in larceny,” Miyares was added. “Talk about the small business owner who can’t meet payroll because 10% to 15% of what’s on their shelf is being stolen from them.”
