Out of the 215 teams participating in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section football playoffs, Villa Park High School of Orange County stands out as one of the most relieved and frustrated.
The Spartans had an impressive regular season, going 9-1 and sharing the Crestview League championship. They were just one point away from an undefeated campaign. With such a strong resume, Villa Park seemed like a shoo-in for the playoffs. However, the team had to endure anxious moments before the playoff-selections announcement.

“We barely got in,” said Villa Park Coach Dusan Ancich. “It’s nuts. It’s a frustrating process, really frustrating.”
Despite the uncertainty, the Spartans secured a spot in the Division 3 field and will host Millikan of Long Beach in their first playoff game. Coach Ancich remains optimistic, saying, “Our guys will be ready to go. It is what it is. We got in. It’s just so dumb that we had to pray to get in, with our record and our situation. It just makes no sense.”
Villa Park’s precarious position can be attributed to the CIF Southern Section’s “equity-based” playoff-selection system, which relies solely on computer power rankings. The Crestview League’s small size, with only four teams, also worked against the Spartans. Despite their 2-1 league record, they had to compete for an at-large spot through a coin flip.
Meanwhile, Brea Olinda, the fourth team in the Crestview League, received an at-large entry into the Division 10 playoffs despite losing all three of its league games by significant margins.
Ultimately, Villa Park’s computer ranking secured them the last at-large berth in Division 3, narrowly beating out Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.
According to Southern Section Assistant Commissioner Thom Simmons, the selection system aims to reward teams that perform well in league play and consider strength of schedule in the computer rankings. However, it doesn’t guarantee a chance at winning a championship.
Despite the challenges, Villa Park is determined to compete in Division 3 and leave the past behind. As Coach Ancich said, “Right now, it’s zero and zero. Everything in the past is over. That’s how it is.”
