A Shocking Incident: Security Officer Shot During High School Fight
A fight erupted in the parking lot of a high school in Utica, New York, on Saturday, resulting in a terrifying turn of events. As chaos ensued, a brave Utica City School District security officer attempted to intervene, only to be shot in the back of the head.
“A large fight occurred after a football game at a Proctor High School parking lot off of Tilden Avenue,” Utica Police Chief Mark Williams stated. “During the fight, two Utica City School District security officers attempted to break up the fight. During the altercation, shots rang out. A UCSD security officer was shot in the back of the head. He was transported to the local hospital, where he’s listed in critical but stable condition.”
The shocking incident was captured on video, revealing the heroic efforts of multiple security personnel trying to restore order. However, the footage takes a chilling turn as one of the officers suddenly collapses. (You can watch the video here; warning: graphic content.)
Immediate Response and Investigation
In response to the incident, Utica School District Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Davis announced the cancellation of all on-campus activities on Sunday, as well as after-school activities for Monday.
The group involved in the violent altercation had previously been turned away from Binghamton High School. Although the stadium for Proctor High School is equipped with metal detectors, the security guard refused to grant them permission to enter, suspecting they were carrying weapons.
“He suspected that something wasn’t right with this group and he refused to lead them into the stadium,” Williams said.
The Utica Police Department expressed their gratitude to the security officer on Facebook, acknowledging his heroic actions and those of others who risked their safety to protect spectators and students.
While an arrest has been made, the investigation into the shooting is still ongoing. The suspect, a 16-year-old male, is not a current student at Proctor High School but is enrolled in an alternative educational program. Due to his age, his name cannot be released at this time. However, the police department is working closely with the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office to seek the ability to prosecute the suspect as an adult.
