Victor Marx succeeds in GOP primary for Colorado governor
Victor Marx, a Marine Corps veteran, won the Colorado Republican primary for governor against state Sen. barbara Kirkmeyer, despite her backing from the GOP establishment. The election results, announced after a close count, showed Marx leading Kirkmeyer by fewer than 3,000 votes. Marx will now face Democratic candidate Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser in the November general election. Marx has publicly expressed confidence in his victory, highlighting that he has proven change is possible. Kirkmeyer acknowledged the race but emphasized she remains proud of her campaign and hopes voters choose the best path for Colorado. Notably, Marx has shared a controversial personal history claim about killing someone at age 7, which has drawn attention. Endorsements for Marx included from Rep. Lauren Boebert and Rep. gabe Evans, while President Trump has not endorsed him. Marx aims to succeed term-limited Governor Jared Polis in the upcoming election.

The primary election took place on June 30, but the results were too close to call until Thursday. The final vote count showed Marx leading Kirkmeyer by less than 3,000 votes. The third candidate, Colorado state Rep. Scott Bottoms, trailed far behind the front-runners.

Kirkmeyer and Bottoms previously said they wouldn’t support Marx’s campaign against the Democratic nominee if he won the Republican primary, casting him as an unqualified “con man” who tells “tall tales.” Marx claims his stepfather forced him to kill a man when he was 7 years old.
Marx will face Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser in November in the race to succeed term-limited Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO). Weiser had a sizable lead over Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) in the Democratic primary late last month.
On Thursday, the Republican nominee thanked his supporters for voting for him and encouraged others who did not vote for him to support his campaign for the general election.
“If you’re frustrated, skeptical, or wondering if anything can actually change,” he said in a three-minute video, “I just proved it by winning the primary.”
Kirkmeyer also shared a statement after the primary race was called, reflecting on her campaign performance while taking a shot at her primary opponent.
“Now the voters will make the final decision in November, and I hope they choose the path that is best for Colorado,” she said in a statement. “I’m still proud of the campaign we ran … and, for the record, I still haven’t killed anyone.”

Bottoms has not addressed the final results of the Republican primary on social media.
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) endorsed Marx in the primary race, and Rep. Gabe Evans (R-CO) congratulated the military veteran and evangelical pastor on his victory. President Donald Trump has not endorsed Marx.
