Vance says ‘crazy’ el Sayed would hurt middle class and auto industry

Vice President JD Vance took a swing at Michigan’s Democratic Senate candidate, leftist Abdul el Sayed, calling him “crazy” in an interview on Saturday morning.
“The problem with el Sayed is that he is a person who claims to stand for working people, and yet he opposed [President] Donald Trump‘s policies that have quite literally saved the Michigan auto industry,” Vance said on Fox News’s Saturday in America.

Vance and el Sayed have clashed in the public eye since the Democratic candidate first made comments attacking Vance and his family in an April podcast, months before el Sayed was chosen as the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan this week. Once the left-wing Democrat defeated centrist Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) to advance to the general election, el Sayed and Vance began to trade barbs again.
Vance initially criticized el Sayed this week after the primary results, questioning how the former public health official can “fight for the working class by flooding his state and his country with low-wage immigrants.” El Sayed swung back, calling Vance “Peter Thiel’s boy” and saying he “decided to suck up to power.”
“That Peter Thiel’s boy? With that Ohio charisma he’s got? That guy, I think we’ve had enough with him. The last thing that he said that made any sense was Hillbilly Elegy,” el Sayed said, swiping at Vance.
Vance responded to el Sayed’s remarks Saturday morning, saying he doesn’t “pay that guy much mind” and took aim at el Sayed’s progressive policy stances.
“This is not a guy who wants a prosperous economy where auto workers and everybody else can actually raise a family, ideally on a single wage if they so choose,” Vance said. “What he is actually trying to build is an economy where you tax some people, you give it to Democratic Party-favored interest groups, and that’s just not how you create prosperity. You create prosperity by actually rebuilding the middle class in this country, rebuilding the industrial foundation of middle class prosperity.”
Vance said he was not surprised by el Sayed’s personal attacks, saying “he’s just kind of an odd guy.”
“I think that it’s telling that instead of talking about what he wants to do to make the lives of Michiganders better, he takes personal insults at me,” Vance said. “I’m the vice president; it comes with the territory. I think the guy is crazy and would be a terrible senator for the people of Michigan.”

El Sayed will take on GOP candidate former Rep. Mike Rogers in the general election in November, setting up a much-anticipated showdown to see who will replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) in the U.S. Senate. Trump-endorsed Rogers lost by less than 20,000 votes to Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) in the 2024 election.
The open seat is considered a toss-up by election forecasters like the Cook Political Report.
